Number style & position
Preview โ page 1
This free tool adds page numbers to a PDF entirely in your browser โ your file is never uploaded to any server. Drop in a PDF, choose where the numbers go (any corner or centre, top or bottom), pick a format (just the number, "Page X", or "X of N"), set the start number, font size and margin in points, and optionally skip the first page if it's a cover. The numbers are written permanently into the file, so they appear in every PDF viewer and when you print. No signup, no watermark, and no file-size limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The entire process runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF never leaves your device, which makes this safe for confidential contracts, statements and reports.
Where can I place the page numbers?
You can place them in six positions: bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center, top right or top left. Bottom center is the default. You also control the margin from the page edge in points.
What number formats are available?
Three: just the number ("1"), "Page 1", or "1 of 10" where the second value is the total count of numbered pages. Pick the one that matches your document's style.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the start number to any whole number โ for example start at 0, or at a higher number to continue numbering across multiple documents. Every following page increments from there.
Can I skip the first page, like a cover?
Yes. Tick "Skip first page" and the first page is left untouched; numbering begins on page two using your chosen start number, which is ideal for documents with a title or cover page.
Will the page numbers show when I print or open the PDF elsewhere?
Yes. The numbers are drawn directly into the PDF content, not added as a temporary screen overlay, so they appear in every PDF viewer, when shared, and when printed.
Does it change the rest of my PDF?
No. Only the page numbers are added; all existing text, images and formatting are preserved. You download a new file and your original stays as-is.
Is there a file-size limit or signup?
No signup and no imposed file-size limit โ because the work happens on your own device, the only limit is your computer's memory. It's completely free.
