Image to Text
Turn any image into editable text with private, in-browser OCR.
Drag & drop an image here, or click to choose (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, BMP). OCR runs entirely in your browser โ your image is never uploaded.
Recognition options
This image to text converter uses OCR (optical character recognition) to extract text from an image right in your browser. Drop a PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP, choose one of 11 recognition languages, and Tesseract reads the text on your device โ nothing is ever uploaded. Copy the result with one click or download it as a .txt file. Because the OCR runs locally, your screenshots, scans and photos stay private, and there is no signup, watermark, or page limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I extract text from an image?
Upload or drag an image into the tool, pick the recognition language, and click Extract text. The OCR engine reads the image and shows the editable text in seconds, ready to copy or download.
Is this image to text converter really free and private?
Yes. It is completely free with no signup, and the OCR runs entirely in your browser using Tesseract.js. Your image never leaves your device โ only the small language model is fetched once.
What image formats can I extract text from?
PNG, JPG/JPEG, WEBP, GIF and BMP are all supported. For best OCR accuracy, use a clear, high-resolution image where the text is sharp and well-lit.
Which languages does the OCR support?
Eleven: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Chinese (Simplified) and Japanese. Choose the language that matches the text in your image before extracting.
Can it read handwriting?
This OCR is tuned for printed and typed text and works best on clean documents, screenshots and signage. Handwriting and stylised or very low-resolution text may not be recognised reliably.
Why is the first extraction slower?
The first time you use a language, the tool downloads that language's training model once. After that it is cached, so further extractions in the same language start immediately.
Can I download the extracted text?
Yes. After extraction you can copy the text to your clipboard or download it as a plain .txt file named after your image, ready to paste into any editor.
Is there a limit on image size or number of scans?
No hard limit โ because everything runs locally, you can convert as many images as you like for free. Very large images simply take a little longer to process.
