PDF to TXT
PDF to TXT — right in your browser, nothing uploaded.
Drag & drop your PDF here, or click to choose. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
This free PDF to text converter pulls the real, selectable text out of your document — not a picture of it — and lays it out line by line in reading order. Everything happens in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded. Copy the result straight to your clipboard or download it as a .txt file. If a PDF is a scan with no text layer, the tool tells you so rather than returning an empty file.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the PDF to TXT tool?
Drop your PDF onto the box above (or click to choose one) and the result appears straight away — there is no button to press and nothing to upload. You can copy the output to your clipboard or download it as a file.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened and processed directly in your browser using JavaScript, and never leaves your device — nothing is sent to a server at any point. That is what makes it safe for contracts, invoices, medical records and other confidential documents, and it is why the tool still works with your network disconnected.
Why does my PDF return no text?
Because it is almost certainly a scan — a photograph of a page rather than real text. This tool extracts the text layer a PDF already contains, so if that layer is missing there is nothing to pull out. Run the document through an OCR tool first to create a text layer, then convert it here.
Is there a file size or page limit?
There is no limit imposed by us, because nothing is uploaded — the only real constraint is your device’s memory. Documents of a few hundred pages are fine on a normal computer; very large scanned files are more comfortable on a desktop browser than on a phone.
Does it work on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android with nothing to install and no account needed. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline, so you can use it on a plane or a locked-down network.
